Scripture Will Never Justify Homosexuality
Candace Chellew-Hodges, a lesbian “reverend,” has written an article wherein she argues that homosexuals should drop their efforts to prove Scripture justifies homosexuality. It’s an interesting article, if only for the ground she cedes on the issue.
One reason Chellew-Hodges believes homosexuals should stop trying to convince anyone that the Bible condones their behavior is “because the Bible has nothing much to say about homosexuality.” Here Chellew-Hodges shows her ignorance of Scripture. Hasn’t this self-proclaimed “reverend” read the Bible?
Evidently, Ms. Chellew-Hodges thinks that just because the word homosexuality is not on every other page of the Bible means that God must not care about it. She couldn’t be more wrong. God, through His Word, has given humans a clear picture of the boundaries within which He intended human sexuality to function. There are many places in Scripture where God gives standards for proper expressions of sexuality. Even in the places where homosexuality is not mentioned by name, Scripture still creates boundaries that disqualify homosexuality.
For instance, Jesus himself condemned homosexual behavior (and all other forms of sexual perversion) when He quoted Genesis: “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matthew 19:5-6). In reaffirming God’s ordained plan for how sex is to be practiced, Jesus Christ has necessarily invalidated all other forms of sexual behavior, including pre-marital sex, extra-marital sex, bestiality, and homosexuality.
Regardless, “Reverend” Chellew-Hodges is lying when she alleges Scripture doesn’t say much about homosexuality. At several points in Scripture, God unequivocally declares homosexual behavior as outside of His intended boundaries. She should start by reading Genesis 19:1-5, Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13, Romans 1:21-31, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 1 Timothy 1:9-10, and Jude 1:6-7.
Frankly, the reason Ms. Chellew-Hodges is advising her fellow homosexuals to stop justifying their sin with Scripture is because she knows it’s a losing battle. No reinterpretation of Scripture by homosexuals will ever stand up to scrutiny from legitimate scholarship. Besides, the retreat from Scripture she’s advocating only weakens her position. If her advice is taken, to what are homosexuals supposed to appeal in order to justify their behavior before God? Their feelings? That’s hardly solid ground to stand upon.
Most importantly, there is hope for those who realize the sinfulness and futility of their homosexual lifestyle. God’s love is not reserved for people who have always had everything “straight.” Instead, God desires to have a relationship with those who have gone astray. And while there is a great price to be paid for our sin; God has already paid it in full.
