Study Reinforces Benefits of Sexual Purity Before Marriage

On an increasingly frequent basis, scientific/societal studies confirm what Scripture teaches on a host of issues. The latest study to do so was conducted by researchers at Brigham Young University. They found that couples who delay sexual activity until after marriage experience longer marriages. Imagine that!

From the article: “[R]esearchers surveyed more than 2,000 couples, ranging in age from 19 to 71 years, and found that communication, sexual quality, perceived stability and relationship satisfaction were better for those couples who had waited until after marriage to consummate their relationship.

“The bottom line from the study seems to be that if you want to give marriage the best chance of survival, it’s best to make each other wait. The academics who pioneered the study did so because of a lack of empirical data on how the timing of sex between a couple impacts on the longevity of a marriage.”

The study is important not just because it seems to confirm common sense, but because it shows that God has created our world (and those who live on it) to function at its best when in conformity with His laws and guidelines. Don’t be mistaken: God doesn’t need scientific studies to confirm the goodness of His ethic of sexuality. It is good because He has given it. But to an unbelieving world, these types of studies can be important in showing the goodness of God and the rightness of His ideas for sex and marriage.
