Obama Hinting To Future Support of Homosexual “Marriage”
The Obama administration has recently signaled a willingness to fully support homosexual “marriage” sometime in the near future.
President Obama has been making efforts to walk back his 2008 campaign statements against homosexual “marriage.” While Obama has long been a vocal advocate for homosexual “strong civil unions” that have the same benefits and privileges as marriage (in itself an illogical position), it seems he is now moving toward full acceptance of homosexual “marriage.”
It all began in late October when President Obama gave an interview to several pro-homosexual bloggers. Included among the topics of discussion were homosexual “marriage” and the then-proposed repeal of the military’s policy against homosexuality. During the meeting, Obama expressed reservations to support homosexual “marriage” primarily “because of [his] understandings of the traditional definitions of marriage.”
But according to the Christian Post, Obama added, “But I also think you’re right that attitudes evolve, including mine. And I think that it is an issue that I wrestle with and think about…” Citing the homosexuals who work in his administration, Obama said he “care[s] about them deeply.” He continued, “and so while I’m not prepared to reverse myself here, sitting in the Roosevelt Room at 3:30 in the afternoon, I think it’s fair to say that it’s something that I think a lot about.”
And so began President Obama’s move toward support for homosexual “marriage.” In politics, a president’s position on such a volatile issue cannot be reversed overnight without creating an enormous national backlash. Obama’s advisors know this, and they’ve elected to stake out his new position gradually over the next 1-2 years in order to acclimate the American public to the first sitting American president in support of homosexual “marriage.”
Last week’s year-end press conference with President Obama was another indicator of the coming shift in support. When a reporter asked how he could push a repeal of the military’s policy against homosexuality (DADT) on the grounds of “equality” without also supporting nationwide homosexual “marriage,” Obama was again given the opportunity to describe his “personal anguish” over the issue, stating his support for “robust” civil unions that provide every benefit and privilege of marriage (see FPN’s policy paper for the rebuttal to this argument). But once again, Obama cryptically stated that his position is “evolving” on the issue.
It’s not just President Obama doing the hinting, either. On the day before Christmas last week, Vice President Biden took to ABC’s Good Morning America to discuss his belief that the American public will soon support homosexual “marriage.” “I think the country’s evolving,” Biden told the show’s hosts. “And I think you’re going to see, you know, the next effort is probably going to be to deal with so-called DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).” Later in the interview, Biden announced that his position on gay marriage is “evolving.” Surprise, surprise…
Politicians like Obama and Biden are anxiously awaiting the day when polls show a majority of Americans who support the idea because it will give them the ability to publicly announce the position they’ve long held privately. Over the next year or two, look for President Obama to keep playing the angst-ridden philosopher on this issue, even throughout the 2012 campaign. Any increased frequency in his profession of personal “evolution” will only be subtle hints to convince his homosexual base to support him again. Then, if President Obama wins a second term in office, we can expect him to announce his full support of homosexual “marriage” soon afterward.
But Christians should take heart. Regardless of whether President Obama supports homosexual “marriage,” it’s still wrong. God has revealed, through Scripture, His intentions for human sexuality and His intentions for the marriage relationship. Neither includes any room for sinful behaviors like homosexuality. Furthermore, God has revealed His intentions for the function of civil government. Romans 13 shows us that rulers are appointed by God to restrict evil and promote righteousness. Our president should strive to fulfill his God-ordained duty, remembering the words of the prophet Isaiah: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil…”
