2/14/12: New York Churches Scramble to Find New Places of Worship
Podcast: Download (Duration: 1:00 — 1.4MB)
Dozens of churches that are no longer welcome in New York City’s public schools are asking state officials and a federal court to intervene as they seek new venues for Sunday worship.
Congregants are returning to Albany this week to ask the state Assembly to approve a Senate-passed bill that would give houses of worship the same access to public schools as other outside groups. Today, a federal judge will be asked to issue an injunction to allow the churches to continue renting space in the public schools.
The Rev. Mark Gregori, pastor of Cross Way Church and Christian Center, says his congregation has found space to rent in a Catholic school, but says his “heart goes out to all the other churches” that have yet to find an alternate worship site.
