Appeals Court Shows “Compassion” by Opposing Sodomy

ROANOKE – The leader of a state-wide pro-family group today applauded a three-judge panel of the Virginia Court of Appeals for upholding the state’s long-held ban on sodomy.

The Court reaffirmed the law against “carnal knowledge by the mouth or anus” and, therefore, upheld the convictions of nine men arrested for soliciting such acts with undercover policemen in Roanoke’s Wasena Park.

Joe Glover, President of Family Policy Network said, “The Court of Appeals showed compassion today when it upheld the state’s ban on sodomy. This decision is a deterrent to activities that have been proven to lead many people to an early grave.”

“People who engage in homosexual sex acts may claim this is a decision against them,” said Glover. “In reality, it may save the lives of those who would otherwise commit these acts and also many innocent people, too.”

“It’s hard to believe homosexual activists would demand legal endorsement of dangerous sex acts with strangers in public parks,” Glover said. “The very acts they want legalized are leading to early deaths among their own community from AIDS, HIV and Hepatitis. If the Court had overturned the law against sodomy, it would have posed a greater health risk to the citizens of Virginia.”

A recent study commissioned by Oxford University indicates that persons engaging in sodomy by age 20 have just over a fifty percent chance of reaching age sixty-five. Glover said it is tragic that anyone would advocate legalizing such deadly acts, as if they were doing the people who commit them a favor. Glover said, “Sodomy is a dangerous activity with deadly consequences; both for the people who practice it and for the general public. Virginia has a vested interest in seeing that its citizens lives are not destroyed by the inevitable consequences of unnatural sex acts.”

Glover commented on the sodomy case earlier this year after Sam Garrison, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said the Virginia sodomy statute presumes “to tell adults what they can and cannot do in their bedrooms.” Glover responded, “Apparently, Mr. Garrison cannot discern the difference between a public park and a private bedroom.”
