Conservatives now wary of Supreme Court nominee

“From the first time then-candidate George W. Bush spoke of the kind of judge he would nominate to the Supreme Court if he were elected in 2000, the President has promised to appoint “”strict constructionists”” that are “”in the order of Clarence Thomas or Antonin Scalia.”” In July, when John Roberts was announced as a replacement for Justice O’Connor, conservative leaders were confident that Bush had fulfilled his promise. Now, however, evidence is mounting that Roberts could pose problems for conservatives as a member of the High Court.
