Later this month students all over the US will be taking time off from their studies. In Florida, lawmakers are debating what that time away should be called. Is it Winter break? Holiday break? Or Christmas break?

New legislation sponsored by state Senator Steve Wise would require districts to officially refer to the period during which school is not in session and includes Christmas Day as Christmas Break. He asked reporters, “Why do you think we’re off?” It’s Christmas.”

He’s not the only Florida lawmaker who’s frustrated by attempts to make the Christmas season “politically correct.” Senator Gary Siplin has a bill to make “Merry Christmas” the official state greeting for Dec. 25. He also offered legislation that would allow students to initiate public prayer at extracurricular activities.
