7/1/11: School Choice Programs Score Victories

Podcast: Download (Duration: 1:00 — 1.4MB)

This was a productive week for those working for parental choice in education. In Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker signed into law what is being touted as one of “the largest expansion(s) to the state’s school choice programs in (its) history.” Provisions in the law reduce two key barriers: Income eligibility and participant thresholds. Its especially good news for parents in heavily populated counties.

And in Florida Governor Rick Scott signed into law several school choice bills, which not only expand charter and online schools, but also increase school choice scholarships for children with disabilities. It means more students trapped in failing schools will have the ability to transfer to successful schools and classrooms that their parents prefer, thanks to the state’s expanded Opportunity Scholarship program.
