PA County Taxpayers Pay for Prison Inmate’s $2,000 Abortion

Luzerne County has paid a $2,000 bill for a prison inmate’s abortion because the health care provider for inmates would not cover the procedure, Warden Gene Fischi reports.

In March, prison officials said they reluctantly took an inmate to Philadelphia to grant her request for an abortion.

Fischi said the prison couldn’t deny the request or insist she pay for the abortion because a 1987 court ruling by the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals guarantees that inmates have access to abortions.
