The nationally-televised broadcast of the NHL Stanley Cup hockey championship game (6/19/06) on NBC television included the live broadcast of an exuberant hockey player using profanity. The incident violated long-standing Federal Communications Commission (FCC) guidelines, and may trigger the largest penalty in the agency’s history because of recent legislation passed by Congress that President Bush signed into law just days before the infraction.

Two of NASCAR’s most popular drivers are saying television producers should ensure their broadcasts don’t include profanity. Four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon and popular Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt, Jr. both expressed opinions consistent with those of Family Policy Network (FPN) in separate interviews with reporters writing for NASCAR.COM. The drivers voiced their opinions just days after FPN President Joe Glover filed an official FCC complaint against FOX Television for airing profanity during a NASCAR race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The nationally-televised March 26, 2006 broadcast of the “Food City 500″ NASCAR race on the FOX network included an audio broadcast of an angry pit crew chief using profanity. The incident violated broadcasting guidelines set forth by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which preclude networks from airing such language when families may be tuning in. The rules apply even when such incidents are part of live broadcasts.
