‘True Believers’ May Have Repaid George Allen for Betrayals
FPN – U.S. Senator George Allen (R-VA) strayed from his conservative base on the issue of homosexuality while serving as a member of the U.S. Senate. In 2004, Allen broke a campaign promise he made to pro-family conservatives by voting for a bill granting special victim status to people who engage in homosexuality. Earlier in 2000, he signed a “non-discrimination” pledge for homosexual activists who then used his endorsement to pressure lawmakers in the Virginia General Assembly to do the same.
During the 2004 campaign season, Allen publicly chastised U.S. Senate candidate Mel Martinez (R-FL) for pointing out his liberal opponent’s endorsement by homosexual activists. Perhaps most disappointing to conservatives was Allen’s refusal to co-sponsor the Federal Marriage Amendment when in was first introduced in the Senate. Allen discussed the measure with homosexual activists, who later speculated the Senator only supported FMA because of the heat he took for supporting the homosexual hate-crimes bill.
Ironically, George Allen has endured criticism from homosexuals activists for not being MORE supportive of their agenda. One such activist in Washington, D.C. has been “outing” members of George Allen’s Senate staff, exposing their formerly “closeted” homosexual activities. According to the strident homosexual activist – at the very least – George Allen’s general counsel, his chief spokesman, and the person he appointed to be executive director of the Republican Senatorial Committee are all practicing homosexuals. The homosexual activist has even dubbed Allen’s office, “the gayest place on Capitol Hill.”
While most conservative voters in Virginia were disappointed and bewildered by George Allen’s recent failure to be re-elected to the U.S. Senate, a significant minority of values voters knew exactly why he failed to retain his seat. Despite claims by pundits that Allen’s loss was a defeat for conservatism, members of his pro-family base see it differently.
George Allen campaigned as a social conservative in central, southside and southwest Virginia, but he was know to act differently while in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. While most Virginians were largely unaware of George Allen’s duplicity on social issues, there were enough of his ‘true believers’ who knew of Allen’s significant betrayals to make a difference in the 2006 election.
Core conservatives in Virginia knew George Allen hired several homosexuals as senior advisors. They knew he supported the Log Cabin homosexual club. And they knew of his support for the so-called “homosexual hate crimes” bill. In the latter days of the 2006 campaign, they learned of his negative comments about banning abortion in South Dakota, and they read about his heavy investment in the world’s largest manufacturer of the abortifacient “morning-after pill.”
Indeed, most people still believe George Allen is a stalwart conservative who would have nothing to do with the liberal ideology that seems to be so prevalent among other leaders in the halls of Congress. They don’t know the truth about George Allen. However, there were enough pro-family voters in Virginia who knew of his transgressions, who couldn’t bring themselves to vote for him again in 2006.
News stories about George Allen’s pro-homosexual ‘hate crimes’ vote:
Family News in Focus:
Allen tried to claim that the pro-homosexual ‘hate crimes’ bill he voted for “[did] not – and [he] would not be for any bill that would – elevate sexual orientation to a civil right and this bill does not do that” (Note: This is exactly opposite of what George Allen told pro-family leaders during his 2000 campaign.)

Concerned Women for America:
The legislation [that Allen supported] politicizes law enforcement and offers federal bribes to police departments to reclassify crimes as “hate crimes,” thereby setting the stage for additional, more intrusive, hate crimes legislation. In addition, this bill is the first step on a road that leads to the situation in Canada or certain European countries, where it can be considered a criminal act to express moral objections to the practice of homosexuality.
