FPN Endorses Proposition 2 – The Texas Marriage Amendment

On Tuesday, the voters of Texas will consider several new amendments to the state’s Constitution. By far, the most important proposal would define marriage as the exclusive union between a man and a woman.

Family Policy Network (FPN) endorses the Texas Marriage Amendment, and encourages you to vote “YES” for Proposition 2 on Tuesday, November the 8th.

The actual language of Proposition 2 is as follows:

“The constitutional amendment providing that marriage in this state consists only of the union of one man and one woman and prohibiting this state or a political subdivision of this state from creating or recognizing any legal status identical or similar to marriage.”

FPN has invested years of involvement in public policy battles to defend marriage in a variety of states. In fact, FPN leaders are currently involved in battles for the best language for marriage amendment proposals in three other states at this very moment. Unfortunately, some states have had to settle for less-than-desirable language when amending their constitutions. In some cases, the language merely protects the word, “marriage,” while leaving those states vulnerable to perversions of marriage by other names, like “civil unions” or “domestic partnerships.”

Not only will Proposition 2 have the effect of protecting the word, “marriage,” but it will bar attempts by the state and its political subdivisions (like state colleges and universities, and even the legislature itself) from creating so-called “alternative” marriage contracts by other names. Therefore, FPN wholeheartedly supports Tuesday’s Texas Marriage Amendment proposal known as Proposition 2.

Comparing the Lifestyles of Homosexual Couples to Married Couples
Are homosexual households simply another variant of human relationships that should be considered, along with marriage, as “part of mainstream American society”? On the contrary, the evidence indicates that “committed” homosexual relationships are radically different from married couples. Read the full study>

The End of Marriage in Scandinavia A look into a future with Same-sex marriage.
MARRIAGE IS SLOWLY DYING IN SCANDINAVIA. A majority of children in Sweden and Norway are born out of wedlock. Sixty percent of first-born children in Denmark have unmarried parents. Not coincidentally, these countries have had something close to full gay marriage for a decade or more. Same-sex marriage has locked in and reinforced an existing Scandinavian trend toward the separation of marriage and parenthood. The Nordic family pattern–including gay marriage–is spreading across Europe. By looking closely at it we can answer the key empirical question underlying the gay marriage debate. Will same-sex marriage undermine the institution of marriage? It already has. Click here to read the full study>

Marriage: Still the Safest Place For Women and Children
The institution that most strongly protects mothers and children from domestic abuse and violent crime is marriage. Analysis of ten years worth of findings from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), which the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has conducted since 1973, demonstrates that mothers who are or ever have been married are far less likely to suffer from violent crime than are mothers who never marry.
