Corporations Lobby Supreme Court to Redefine Marriage
As FPN previously reported, the U.S. Supreme Court may tilt slightly in favor of forcing all 50 states to reject Biblical marriage in 2013. Now, a number of powerful corporate interests are lobbying justices to redefine marriage by signing on to two briefs filed with the court this week. Lawyers involved in the process argue so-called “gay rights” initiatives are good for business.
The companies will urge the court to invalidate Proposition 8, a California ballot initiative approved by voters that defines marriage as an exclusive union between one man and one woman. They will also ask the court to strike down Section 3 of the federal law known as the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), passed by Congress in 1996, which defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
Companies lobbying justices to redefine marriage include AIG, Cisco, Cummins, Levi Strauss, McGraw Hill, NCR, Nike, Office Depot, Oracle, Panasonic, Qualcomm, Verizon and Xerox. Unfortunately, briefs filed in support of restricting marriage to heterosexual unions did not include endorsements from business interests. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has not taken a position on the issue.
In Matthew 19:4-6, Jesus defined what constitutes a marriage when He said, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”
While no man-made institution can change the Biblical definition of marriage, it is imperative that states retain the right to reflect God’s design for the family in public policy. Otherwise, an evil counterfeit will take its place that will harm children, further corrupt society (if that’s possible), and serve to undermine religious liberties for Bible-believing Christians in free enterprise, government and ministry.
Please pray for the justices on the Supreme Court, and pray for God’s definition of the family to prevail in America.
