Missouri Congressman Todd Akin is under fire for offering prayers before meetings of a subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee. Barry Lynn of the atheist group Americans United for Separation of Church and State claims that “public prayers in public spaces by a public officials” are unconstitutional.
But Akin points out that Congress starts with prayer calling it a good idea to ask the Lord’s blessing before our committee meetings as well” adding “it gives us a sense of being respectful to each other.”
The U.S. Supreme Court agrees with Akin. In the case of Lynch v. Donnelly in 1984, the Court observed: “Our history is replete with official references to the value and invocation of Divine guidance in deliberations and pronouncements of the Founding Fathers and contemporary leaders.”
2 Chronicles 7:14
If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
