2/21/12: WV Marriage Amendment Does Nothing to Protect the Institution

Legislators in West Virginia are considering an amendment to the state’s constitution that would define marriage as the union between one man and one woman. But FPN says the proposal only protects the eight letters in the word marriage, and does nothing to actually protect the institution itself by also prohibiting civil unions, domestic partnerships, and other counterfeits.
Alex Mason of FPN says, “the word “marriage” doesn’t need protecting. What needs protecting is the God-created institution of the one-man, one-woman union that bears that name. Merely protecting the eight letters making up the word “marriage” is short sighted and unwise.”
There is another version of a marriage amendment in the West Virginia legislature that would protect the institution but it is being held up in committee.
