12/7/11: Macy’s Protects Cross-Dressing but Not Religious Freedom

Podcast: Download (Duration: 1:00 — 1.4MB)

A young woman was fired from a Macy’s department store for refusing to permit a man dressed as a woman from entering the women’s dressing room. Natalie Johnson saw a young man walk out of the women’s fitting room and told him that he could not go back in because it was for women only. The cross-dresser was accompanied by five others. The group argued that Macy’s is LGBT-friendly and demanded to use the fitting rooms.

When Johnson was confronted by her employer, she pointed out that Macy’s policy also protects against religious discrimination and, in this case, it protects her right to her beliefs. She was then terminated from her job.

Mathew Staver of Liberty Counsel called Macy’s policy “fraught with problems” and said it will alienate customers.
