American Support for Biblical Marriage is Declining
Gallup’s latest “Values and Beliefs” poll shows that while a majority of Americans still oppose legal recognition of homosexual “marriage,” the percentage has fallen slightly. In fact, in the past 10 years, opposition to homosexual “marriage” has fallen by 10 points in America.
Christians should not base their opposition to gay “marriage” on polls and statistics from the culture. Things change. It’s possible that within another ten years, those who oppose gay “marriage” will be in the minority.
Our opposition to homosexual behavior and, more specifically, homosexual “marriage” should be based on the unchanging Word of God. The Bible unequivocally condemns homosexual acts in numerous passages (e.g., Genesis, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Romans, I Corinthians, I Timothy, and Jude). Our Lord Jesus disqualified homosexuality as a legitimate behavior when he spoke of marriage as an instance of one man and one woman becoming one flesh. Opposing homosexual “marriage” based on polls, science, or reason is only helpful insofar as such reasons complement the primary basis for such opposition: God’s unchanging Word.
