ALERT: Virginia Senate Committee Defeats “Sexual Orientation” Proposal
NOTE: The bill described in this FPN Alert to Virginia list members was DEFEATED in a 8 to 6 committee vote on 2/8/06.
On Wednesday afternoon, (2/8/06), the Senate General Laws Committee will consider legislation that would allow Virginia cities, counties and other “political subdivisions” (like local school boards) to prohibit “discrimination” on the basis of a taxpayer-funded, public employee’s “sexual orientation.” This bill, known as SB700, is extremely dangerous, and we need your help TODAY to defeat it.
The actual wording of SB 700 requires that no state agency shall discriminate in employment based on an employee’s “sexual orientation,” which is then defined in the language as “a person’s actual or perceived heterosexuality, bisexuality, homosexuality or gender identity or expression”¦”
Perhaps the greatest threat posed by this legislation is that it would affect children in our public schools. SB700 would empower homosexual activists to make an issue of their private lifestyle choices with the children they teach by giving them a legal shield to hide behind. While there are certainly homosexuals already working in Virginia’s public schools, their private sexual behavior is not currently flaunted openly. That would change if SB700 becomes law.
For example, imagine a teacher with a photo of his or her homosexual “partner” on their desk. Or, imagine a teacher dressing as a man one week and a woman the next. This bill would bar school principals and/or administrators from using their discretion to deal with such situations. In fact, expressions of homosexual behavior would be protected by law, and any attempt to curtail it could be seen as “discrimination.”
SB 700 would be a powerful, new means for helping homosexual activists to push their agenda in Virginia’s schools, cities and counties throughout the Commonwealth. Please use both of the action items TODAY to urge senators to VOTE NO on SB 700.
