Resolution in House Supports Prayer at Public Meetings

A U.S. congressman has proposed a House resolution supporting prayer before the meetings of school boards and other deliberative bodies.

Representative Tim Walberg recently introduced Resolution 662 that states prayer before school board meetings is a protected act in accordance with the nation’s founding principles. Walberg said that while resolutions are not law, this is an effort “to begin re-informing the citizens of our country that it is okay to pray, it is okay to have religious action take place and, in fact, it goes back to the founding and framework of our country itself.”

He cites a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Marsh v. Chambers, that deliberative public bodies are allowed to pray. The Republican lawmaker from Michigan says he has 33 cosponsors, and hopes for many more.

Walberg says school boards should be allowed to pray.
