Money Behind Obama’s Gay Marriage Announcement?

Barack Obama has become the first US president in history to support homosexual marriage. And while he says this latest position is part of an evolution in his thinking, many conservatives say he’s been in favor of gay marriage all along. If that’s true, it begs the question, why make the announcement now?

A recent article in the Washington Post may hold the answer. It reveals that many of Obama’s key financial supporters are gay–including finance director Rufus Gifford and DNC treasurer Andrew Tobias–and the campaign has regularly held fundraisers focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender donors.

In fact, the Post points out that 1 in 6 of Obama’s most generous supporters are homosexuals and concludes the announcement may get him a boost in donations.
