Civil Unions Proposal in WV Proves Need for Strong Marriage Amendment

Legislators in West Virginia have been considering an amendment to the state’s constitution (SJR-14) that would define marriage as the union between one man and one woman. The trouble is, that’s the only thing it does. The proposed amendment only protects the eight letters in the word marriage, and does nothing to actually protect the institution itself by also prohibiting civil unions, domestic partnerships, and other counterfeits.

Homosexual activists and their sympathizers take advantage of such weak marriage amendments in order to create homosexual legal unions that look like marriage in every way but name. In fact, one such bill creating homosexual “civil unions” has already been introduced in West Virginia in February. It’s possible the weak marriage amendment and the civil unions bill could both be passed into law, which goes to show just how ineffective weak marriage amendments are.

Let’s be clear: the word “marriage” doesn’t need protecting. What needs protecting is the God-created institution of the one-man, one-woman union that bears that name. Merely protecting the eight letters making up the word “marriage” is short sighted and unwise.

There is another version of a marriage amendment (HJR-106) in the West Virginia legislature that would do the job of protecting that institution. Sadly, that proposal is currently being held hostage in committee by pro-homosexual liberal legislators.

West Virginians should call their state legislators and encourage them to push for passage of HJR-106. To

truly preserve God’s ideal in our culture and society, all homosexual legal unions that seek to mirror one-man, one-woman marriage must be prohibited. HJR-106 does exactly that
