12/29/11: Dangers Feared from Internet Gambling
A staunch opponent of predatory gambling doesn’t see the benefit of the U.S. Justice Department deciding to open the door for Internet gambling.
Though Internet gambling is forbidden if it crosses state or national borders, the Obama administration’s DOJ has ruled that it is legal within a state’s borders, except for sports betting. Les Bernal of Stop Predatory Gambling says he does not understand the logic — warning the ruling will “open a lottery retailer in every home, office, and dorm room in America — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”
And Bernal laments that giving the green light to Internet gambling, albeit just within state borders, will create even more “personal debt and addictions than ever before. Bernal goes on to suggest that what America needs is for the government to get out of the gambling business.
