12/23/11: Idaho Bible Case Headed for US Supreme Court

Alliance Defense Fund attorneys filed a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court this week that asks the court to weigh in on the now-defunct Nampa Classical Academy’s lawsuit against Idaho state officials for prohibiting the use of the Bible in the school’s curriculum.

The lawsuit involves the Idaho Public Charter School Commission’s ban on the use of texts and documents deemed to be religious even if taught with regard to their literary and historical importance.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit upheld the ban earlier this year. ADF says if the commission’s interpretation of state law is allowed to stand, all Idaho public school and university students will be subject to the ban. NCA operated for one year before the state closed it because of concerns about its finances
