Biblical Love For Homosexuals Requires Telling the Truth About Sin

If you saw someone who was doing something to hurt himself or others, wouldn’t you urge him to stop? Would you be surprised if he then called you intolerant or bigoted for asking him to stop doing those harmful things? Such is the response many Christians (including FPN) receive for their Biblical opposition to homosexuality.

The unbelieving world accuses Christians of hatred for homosexuals. But if Christians hated homosexuals, they wouldn’t want to urge them to stop their practices.

Science has firmly established that homosexuality is a deadly practice, leading millions to early graves. If Christians actually hated homosexuals, they would delight in that fact. But true Christians don’t delight in such a thought. Biblical Christians are sobered by those statistics, and they believe Scripture points to hope for homosexuals – God does change hearts and minds and He does draw sinners to Himself, regardless of any merit they may or may not have.

This is love: Caring about someone so much that you beg them to stop destructive and damning behavior.

Christians are opposed to vigilante violence or hatred towards homosexuals. There are certain groups of people that practice those things, but they do not represent true Christianity. However, Christians cannot dismiss what God says about homosexuality. All Scripture is God-breathed, inerrant, authoritative, and consistent; because of that, Christians know that God calls this behavior an abomination and a detestable practice (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13).

It is impossible for anyone to legitimize or make holy what God Himself has called unholy. God created men and women with biological differences that complement each other and, under the vows of marriage, allow for the continuation of the human race (Genesis 1:26, 27). Jesus Christ even reiterated the importance of God’s plan for human sexuality by quoting Scripture: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh (Matthew 19:5).” Homosexuality is rebellion to God’s plan for sexuality. It, like other sexual sins, is a direct result of man’s sin nature. It affects everyone.

Christians know that society should not endorse behavior that is antithetical to God’s clear commands. Romans 13 makes clear that the purpose of government is to restrict evil and promote good. Why should any government encourage and validate a behavior that has been proven to be deadly? Is society better off with no morals, no standards, and no limits? When people live like they want, chaos ensues. It is the duty of Christians to oppose evil and confront it wherever possible (Ephesians 5:11).

The truth is that all people are sinners in God’s eyes. The Word of God says that there is none righteous, not even one person (Romans 3:10). It goes on to say that ALL humans have sinned and that ALL humans fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). But Scripture also promises that if anyone is in Christ he is a new creature, old things pass away and all things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The only hope for sinners (homosexual and heterosexual alike) is faith in Jesus Christ: “All who call on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13).
