Hawaii Takes Another Step Toward Rejecting Biblical Marriage

On January 28th, the Hawaii State Senate passed a bill granting civil unions to homosexuals in the state. The development should be added to the long list of reasons why weak state marriage amendments accomplish nothing in the long-term.

In 1998, Hawaii’s legislature passed a constitutional amendment that merely “reserved” for the legislature the power to define marriage as between one man and one woman. They still have not taken advantage of this reserved power and actually defined marriage as such. In other words, it was a do-nothing amendment that hardly protects the institution of marriage.

Thirteen years after Hawaii passed their amendment, the state senate has approved the first legal barrage against one-man, one-woman marriage. Homosexual “civil unions” provide most of the same benefits and privileges of traditional marriage while retaining a title other than “marriage.” Rewarding non-marital relationships is harmful, regardless of the name the arrangements are given.

Advocates of weak marriage amendments often cite pragmatism as the underlying reason for their capitulation. “Something is better than nothing,” they say. But pro-family activists cannot fight the principled war over the definition of marriage with pragmatism as their top priority. The ends do not justify the means. Any state marriage amendment that forbids “gay marriage” while leaving open the option for civil unions, domestic partnerships, or any similar union is an egregious compromise and a waste of precious political capital and resources.
