[Family Policy Network] – The Democrat-controlled U.S. House of Representatives is poised to pass one of the most dangerous, pro-homosexual bills in the history of Congress this Thursday. The bill, known as the “Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act,” includes a provision that adds the term “sexual orientation” to the list of federally protected “hate crimes” categories. This change in the law would make it more of a crime to harm some people, simply because they engage in sexually deviant behavior.

If passed, the bill would also provide millions of dollars in funding to aid investigation and prosecution of such crimes, making them a greater priority than other crimes for law enforcement officials and government attorneys. In addition to the term “sexual orientation,” the proposal would add “gender identity,” which refers to people who dress in clothing normally worn by members of the opposite sex. The legislation says a “hate crime” is one “motivated by prejudice based on the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of the victim, or is a violation of the state, local, or tribal hate crime laws.”

Liberals in Congress claim religious free speech will not be affected by adding the term “sexual orientation” to the list of federally protected “hate crimes” categories, but recent events both at home and abroad prove otherwise. In 2004, Swedish officials jailed a Christian pastor for a month because he preached against the sin of homosexuality.

More recently, overzealous police and liberal prosecutors in Pennsylvania used a local homosexual “hate crimes” law to jail a grandmother and ten others who shared their faith with participants at a homosexual rally in Philadelphia. According to WorldNetDaily, a spokesman for Life and Liberty Ministries verified the Christians present obeyed all laws, city ordinances and lawful requests by the Philadelphia police officers on hand. The spokesman stated, “They were promptly and without warning arrested and hauled off to jail, where they spent 21 hours before being released on Monday morning.”

Eight charges were filed against the protesters, including three felonies and five misdemeanors. The charges were: criminal conspiracy, possession of instruments of crime, reckless endangerment of another person, ethnic intimidation, riot, failure to disperse, disorderly conduct, and obstructing highways.

Prosecutors attempted to win convictions against the Christians, and sentences of up to 47 years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines. While the charges against them were eventually dropped and they were released, the incident served as an ominous foretaste of what could come if “˜hate crimes’ legislation is passed.

Michael Marcavage was one of those arrested for sharing the gospel to homosexuals in Philadelphia. He says, “Having been charged under Pennsylvania’s hate crimes law for declaring the truth about homosexuality, I can assure you that if this bill is passed and signed into law, it will be used to put Christians behind bars.”

The House of Representatives is set to vote on the proposal on Thursday, May 3rd.
