NC Parents Told They Need a “Home School License” to Homeschool

In North Carolina, a family that decided to withdraw their son from a public school in order to teach him at home received a quick call from a school official. The middle school official refused to remove the boy from the public school rolls until the mother first produced a ‘home school license.’

The Home School Legal Defense Association said that means “the child would be considered truant by the public school while being taught in a homeschool setting.”

The parents contacted the Home School Legal Defense Association, who contacted the school to inform the official that “the family was in full compliance with state law, having filed a notice of intent to operate a homeschool with the North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education.”

And as it turns out, there is “no such thing as a ‘home school license’.”
