Newswire Takes Issue with Christian School in California

(Ontario, California) – A news article published nationally by the Associated Press (AP) on 9/23/05 took issue with a Christian school in California for expelling a student who did not disclose that her “parents” (sic) are avowed lesbians. According to the AP, the teen’s mother has been in the lesbian relationship for 22 years, but the school only learned of the relationship this week. The school’s website expressed regret that the mother did not disclose her lesbian relationship at the time of admission, since it violated the schools written admissions standards, and “would have prevented enrollment and the occasion for misunderstanding.”

The admissions policy at Ontario Christian School contains a clause that bars admission to prospective students whose parents engage in lifestyles “immoral or inconsistent with a positive Christian lifestyle, such as cohabitating without marriage or in a homosexual relationship.” According to the school’s website, the institution works with parents “to train children ‘in the way they should go’.”

The school’s site also states, “Ontario Christian School believes in a three-fold “partnership” that includes church, home and school. We believe that by working together our children will reach their full academic and spiritual potential and develop the foundation of a meaningful and successful life. To that effect, we require that families enrolled at O.C. are Christian or Catholic, attending a church regularly. We also encourage parents, grandparents, and extended family to be supportive of the education process and its needs.”

The AP article appeared in newspapers throughout the country and on several newspaper’s websites, including washingtonpost.com.
