FPN “Marriage Defense” Project
Help FPN preserve the centuries-old definition of marriage between one man and one woman by opposing governmental recognition of “alternative” family forms.
In 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court created a Constitutional “right” to same-sex sodomy in the landmark case known as Lawrence v. Texas. That same year, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court took the unprecedented step of requiring its legislature to create so-called “gay marriages,” thereby triggering fears that the full faith and credit clause in the U.S. Constitution would be used to require all states to recognize homosexual “unions” from Massachusetts. Although the state legislature failed to change the definition of marriage, then governor Mitt Romney signed an executive order paving the way for homosexual “marriage” for the first time in American history.
Since that time, Family Policy Network has been working to defend the institution of marriage in a variety of ways, including:
- Working to remind citizens the institution of marriage was established by God, and arguing on behalf of the design for marriage that God established
- Promoting the need for a Marriage Protection Amendment to the United States Constitution, in order to preserve marriage universally in western civilization
- Opposing efforts to water down a federal definition of marriage that would permit government recognition of any other domestic relationships outside marriage
- Endorsing campaigns to amend state constitutions designed to protect the Biblical definition of one-man, one-woman marriage
- Opposing compromise language for state marriage amendments that only defines the term “marriage,” thereby keeping the door open for legal recognition of immoral relationships, albeit by other names.
TAKE ACTION:
Join our “Marriage Defense” project to help defend the Biblical definition of one-man, one-woman marriage in one or more of the following ways:
- If your state legislature is considering proposals to amend its constitution to protect marriage, send your state legislators a link to FPN’s position paper on this topic (http://familypolicy.net/papers/?p=376)
- Lobby your legislators to sponsor such an amendment (click here for sample wording to propose)
- Contribute to FPN to help with this and other projects designed to inform Christians and confront the culture on the important moral issues of the day.
“And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6).
State marriage amendments that merely define the term “marriage” without banning counterfeits should be opposed. Once weak language is defeated, comprehensive language can be proposed and the foundational institution of the family will be promoted and protected.
“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34). Make a difference by staying informed and speaking out against conservative compromises in the halls of government.

Democrats, Minorities Overwhelmingly Backed Marriage Amendment in Texas
Just days after voters in Texas passed a constitutional ban on so-called “gay marriage,” the Houston Chronicle reported that the sweeping support for defining the traditional family cut across the entire political spectrum. The newspaper reported that all types of voters backed the pro-family measure, indicating that the marriage amendment’s appeal was not limited to any certain demographic or voting bloc. The Texas marriage amendment, known as “Proposition 2,” won state-wide, with 76% of Texans casting a positive vote.
According to conventional political wisdom, minority voters like blacks and Hispanics tend to support Democrat politicians who often undermine pro-family causes. However, voters in minority precincts rejected the pro-homosexual position of those same liberal politicians, voting instead to secure the Biblical definition of marriage in the state constitution.

Marriage Protection Amendment Defeated in U.S. Senate
[June, 2006] - Pro-family leaders say the battle for a federal marriage amendment will continue despite this week’s effort by Democrats and a handful of Republicans in the U.S. Senate to keep the matter from coming up for a vote.
Despite the setback, Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas says the fight to protect traditional marriage must continue. “I think it is a foundational issue for society,” the senator says. “When that institution frays, our country frays. When that institution is redefined, we harm how we raise the next generation.”

CHARLOTTE OBSERVER: ‘Quiet Issue’ of gay unions gets noisier in S.C.
(Charlotte Observer: 10/28/06) - In South Carolina, simply passing a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman is not enough: [supporters] want to win with 80 percent of the vote. .. “Personally, I don’t want to see a 55 percent or 60 percent vote,” said Mike Wallace, missions development director for the York Baptist Association. “I want to see an 80 percent vote. That would represent South Carolina values.” .. Nationally, supporters aren’t losing any sleep about the result. “South Carolina is one of those states where it’s guaranteed,” said Joe Glover, president of the Family Policy Network in Washington, D.C. The network is campaigning across the country to pass the amendments banning gay marriage.
New York Liberal Links “Gay Marriage,” Destruction of Family Unit
A recent column in a conservative publication shows just how broad the political support base is for protecting one-man, one-woman marriage. Readers may not be surprised to learn the head of an organization promoting “American values” penned a commentary in The Weekly Standard — making a strong case for the relationship between the adoption of “gay marriage” and the erosion of traditional values (i.e., higher rates of divorce, unwed childbearing, nonmarital cohabitation, etc.). The surprise comes when readers learn the author is a self-described liberal Democrat from New York who does NOT otherwise oppose homosexual behavior.
Court Declares Homosexual “Marriages” Performed in Canada as Valid in New York
Just how long will it take for rogue judges to force homosexual “marriage” onto the Empire State? It may come quicker than you think, thanks to an ruling from the New York Supreme Court. During the week of August 6, 2007, the court ruled that any homosexual “marriages” performed in Canada will be recognized as legal in the state of New York. Homosexual “couples” are now able to travel across the Canadian border to get “married”, and then come back to New York with all the legal rights and benefits intended for one-man, one-woman married couples.

Pro-family groups are denouncing a new California bill passed by the state senate Friday that grants marriage licenses to homosexual couples. MD Court Upholds Marriage as Union Between One Man, One Woman
Maryland’s highest court has upheld a state statute that defines marriage as the union between one man and one woman. On September 18th, 2007, the Maryland Court of Appeals reaffirmed the state’s long-standing marriage statute by overturning a lower circuit court’s January 2006 decision that would have allowed homosexuals to “marry”.
In the 4-3 decision, the Court of Appeals cited the government’s interest in “safeguarding an environment most conducive to the stable propagation and continuance of the human race” as a reason for the decision. The court further concluded that since homosexual practices do not qualify as “immutable characteristics”, there is no “fundamental right to marry” afforded to homosexuals.
MD Pro-Family Legislators Vow to Introduce Marriage Amendment
Conservative Maryland lawmakers [have] promised to reintroduce a constitutional amendment that would make clear that marriage is an institution limited to heterosexual couples, an amendment that has stalled in committee in years past. Del. Donald H. Dwyer Jr., an Anne Arundel County Republican, has been at the forefront of past efforts to pass a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. While he called yesterday “a wonderful day” in the wake of the court ruling, he wasn’t dialing back the rhetoric. Even though the court agreed with his stance, he still thinks a constitutional amendment — which would have to be approved by voters — is a necessity.
MD Homosexual Activists Prepare to Assault Biblical Marriage
Despite a favorable court ruling for conservatives, the debate over “gay marriage” in Maryland apparently is far from over.
Several Democrats, including state Sen. Gwendolyn Britt and Del. Victor Ramirez, say they will sponsor bills that would legalize “gay marriage” when the General Assembly meets against next year, the Montgomery County Sentinel reported. Their action comes after the Maryland Court of Appeals — the highest court in the state — refused in a September 4-3 decision to legalize “gay marriage.”
California Bill Would Disincentivize Marriage
A bill ensuring that unwed parents remain unmarried is receiving strong opposition from a leading California-based pro-family organization. Campaign for Children and Families (CCF) President Randy Thomasson criticized the proposal by saying, “SB 1066 rewards unwed parents for not getting married.” He added, “This foolish bill promotes cohabitation just as government welfare programs subsidized illegitimacy. SB 1066 ensures that unwed parents remain uncommitted. Why get married if you can get the legal rights and benefits of marriage without saying ‘I do?’ And what about the kids, who research shows do much worse in unmarried environments? SB 1066 is bad public policy. It’s blind to the evidence that marriage is 1000 percent more stable than shacking up.”
Schwarzenegger Violates Oath By Opposing Proposition 8 After Election
On November 4th, 2008, nearly six million California citizens rejected radical homosexual activism by writing the Biblical definition of marriage into their state’s constitution. They did so by supporting a ballot refferendum known as “Proposition 8,” which passed on the same day Barak Obama was elected president. Before the election, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger publicly [...]
“Tolerant and Diverse” Homosexuals Attack Grandmother, Stomp Cross

In the video, homosexual activists surround an older lady who wants to defend the Biblical definition of marriage. They then strip a cross out of her hands and stomp it on the ground and chant “go home” and “shame on you.”
A television news crew captured the footage. Subsequently, homosexuals shouted down an attempt by the crew to interview the woman.
